Theology Symposium – Authority and the Church

This one-day Symposium is an opportunity to explore the role of authority in the Church, especially in light of developments in synodality and a post-modern culture. A particular focus will be the relationship between Revelation and the Papacy.

9.00-9.15: Welcome and Opening Address

9.15-10.15: Prof Jacob Phillips (St Mary’s London) – Ecclesial Authority, Truth and Freedom in a postmodern culture.

10.15-10.45: Coffee break

10.45-11.45: Rev Dr Vincent Twomey(Emeritus Professor Maynooth) – Papal and Synodal Authority: What can we learn from the 4th century?

11.45- 12.45: Rev Timothy Radcliffe OP (Oxford)- Authority in the Synodal Church

12.45-13.15: Questions and Discussion

13.15-14.00- Lunch

14.00-14.15: Coffee (outside Aula Spencer)

14.15- 15.15: Mr John Stayne (Durham)- Integrating the Papacy: Papal Infallibility and a Synodal Church.

15.15-15.45- Coffee Break

15.45- 16.45 Dr Mary McCaughey (Oscott)-Authority and Truth: Joseph Ratzinger on the Democratic function of the Magisterium.

16.45- 17.15: Panel Discussion

17.30-18.15: Adoration and evening prayer.

18.15: Evening Meal (for speakers and invited guests)/ Departures

All are most welcome to attend but the event is particularly suited to those with an interest in academic theology. Please note that the ticket includes access to all lectures, refreshments (breakfast for early arrivals after early Mass, three coffee breaks and a sit-down two course lunch).

Accommodation is not included. The nearest hotels are in Sutton Coldfield. Travelodge, Boldmere Road is in walking distance.

Parking at the college is free of charge.

Cost: Tickets are £55 from Eventbrite . A limited number of tickets for students and OAPs are available at a discounted price of £35 and may no longer be available when the quota is already sold.
