Unearthly Beauty: The Aesthetic of St John Henry Newman
An event at St Mary’s College Oscott to celebrate the launch of Unearthly Beauty: The Aesthetic of St John Henry Newman, written by Fr Guy Nicholls and published by Gracewing to mark Newman’s canonisation by Pope Francis on October 13th.
In this significant new book Fr Nicholls examines in detail for the first time the aesthetic that inspired the saint. Newman saw beauty in all its forms as leading us to its perfection in God, drawing humanity towards its own destiny of the beatific vision of God’s infinite perfections and an eternal share in God’s glory. The book celebrates the saint’s use and understanding of art, architecture and music in his priestly apostolate, and helps us appreciate his full significance.
The book itself will be available for sale at £20, a specially reduced price for the occasion, and Fr Nicholls will be signing copies.
Tea and coffee will be served afterwards.
Rev. Dr Guy Nicholls CO is a priest of the Birmingham Oratory. He holds degrees in Classics and Theology from Cambridge, Rome and Oxford. He is the Founder and Director of the John Henry Newman Institute of Liturgical Music, and lectures at Oscott.
