During the month of November, some Dioceses and/or Parishes have a custom of blessing the Catholic cemeteries or individual graves. Some Dioceses and/or Parishes practice this custom on a different day of the year. This practice reminds the faithful that our departed brothers and sisters in Christ are in need of our prayers, especially those who are still in Purgatory.
How it works at Oscott:
Here at Oscott we celebrate the Blessing of the graves by processing to our graveyard from the chapel praying the rosary. Once at the graveyard we celebrate the liturgy of the word after that the priests and seminarians walk around the site with holy water. The visitors then stand by the tomb of their loved ones and ask for the blessing.
